Joint scientific symposium on corrosion in national industries

Under the slogan “For National Industries Free of Corrosion” and under the patronage of the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Muhammad Hassan Al-Ghabban, and under the supervision of the Head of the Production and Minerals Engineering Department, Prof. Muhannad Muhammad Hussein Al-Khafaji, the Production and Minerals Engineering Department organized in cooperation with the Chemical Engineering Department, the Oil and Gas Engineering Department, and the Center Iraqi Corrosion Center / Ministry of Industry and Minerals and Research and Development Center / Ministry of Oil A specialized scientific engineering symposium under the title: (Corrosion in national industries) on Thursday, 5/2/2024, in the hall of the late Professor Jassim Al-Hayani in the building of the Production and Minerals Engineering Department, in the presence of the Assistant President of the University. For Administrative Affairs, Prof. Dr. Farhad Muhammad Othman, heads of scientific departments and research centers, and a large number of teachers and researchers from inside and outside the university

The symposium’s activities included three axes: the first axis was corrosion in oil industries, the second was about corrosion in electrical industries, and the third axis was about oil pollution and its environmental damage.

The symposium opened with verses from the Holy Quran and the Iraqi national anthem, followed by a speech by the Head of the Production and Minerals Engineering Department, Prof. Muhannad Muhammad Hussein Al-Khafaji, in which he stressed the importance of the symposium in exploring the most common engineering and physical dimensions of the corrosion phenomenon, including its causes, mechanisms, and techniques used to combat and reduce it. Of its effects.

The first session was headed by Prof. Muhannad Hussein Al-Khafaji and the rapporteur of Prof. Dr. Ali Mazhar Rassan of two research papers. The first was delivered by Prof. Dr. Fadel Sarhan Kazem, Head of the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering, entitled Corrosion in the Petroleum Industries. The second was about corrosion in every place and in every day of life, delivered by A. Dr. Sami Ibrahim Al-Rubaie, Prof. Dr. Firas Farhan Sayed, Prof. Dr. Ali Munther Mustafa, and Prof. Mahdi Matar Hanoun. The third paper was about the role of corrosion research centers in solving corrosion problems in national industries. It is a joint paper between the center Petroleum Research and Development/The Iraqi Ministry of Oil and the Iraqi Center for Corrosion/The Iraqi Ministry of Industry and Minerals, while the second session, chaired by Prof. Dr. Najm Abdul Kadhim Al-Rubaie, Scientific Assistant for the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering, and the rapporteur of Prof. Dr. Khaled Hamid Rashid, presented two research papers, the first on oil pollution. And methods of treating A.D. Salman Hussein Abbas and the second on corrosion problems in steam turbines of electric power stations and methods of treating their corrosion, delivered by Prof. Dr. Sami Abu Al-Nun Ajeel and Prof. Dr. Ali Mazhar Rassan.

The symposium came out with many recommendations, the most important of which are: taking the necessary measures to prevent corrosion during the design stage by companies and institutions, increasing interest in the issue of corrosion in Iraqi universities and institutes and introducing it as a main subject in the curricula of the relevant scientific engineering departments, the necessity of introducing artificial intelligence technology in solving and treating corrosion problems in Companies, increasing cooperation and interaction between universities and work fields on the subject of corrosion, opening corrosion centers in Iraqi universities and industrial institutions, especially those suffering from the problem of corrosion, supplying universities with advanced corrosion devices to keep pace with technological progress in the world, subscribing to scientific journals specialized in corrosion by the university. And government institutions and encourage the completion of experiments in the research and projects of postgraduate students, including reducing the fees for laboratory tests, as well as holding workshops and seminars and forming special committees in ministries, reinforced by university professors, to develop solutions to the problem of corrosion in national industries and to know the losses caused by corrosion in Iraq annually.

In conclusion, certificates of appreciation were distributed to the researchers for their distinguished role in the success of the symposium.
